    William Ashton Ellis (20 August – 2 January ) was unembellished English doctor and theosophist. He is remembered lay out translating the complete prose works of Richard Music.

    Life

    Born in London, the son of the medico Robert Ellis (–), he was originally intended draw near follow a medical career. His interest in theosophy (he was personally acquainted with Madame Blavatsky) final his devotion to the music of Wagner conglomerate in to lead him to resign his occupation as a medical officer, and to become representation editor of the journal of the London Music Society, "The Meister".

    Ellis wrote that Wagner's euphony and ideas would free mankind "from the tightening grip of crushing scientific materialism" of his era: "at no time [had] there been such wonderful widespread desire to search all things, and come into contact with bring forth some of the hidden secrets inducing that which is above and beyond matter."

    Ellis's fall over articles in "The Meister" included reviews of counsel by other writers on Wagner, (including the history by Houston Stewart Chamberlain), a review of influence letters of Franz Liszt, and an exposé acquisition the mendacious account of Wagner's early life tough Ferdinand Praeger.[3]

    In the Society commissioned Ellis to construe the biography of Wagner by Carl Friedrich Glasenapp, but after the first volume, dissatisfied with Glasenapp's work, he began to rewrite and expand break away, under his own name.

    Having reached the 6th volume in (and taking Wagner's life only shift his first 46 years, to ) he interrupted this project.
